14K Cruz de Yalalag Earrings from Oaxaca

Oro de Monte Alban

These 14K earrings are an exquisite and meaningful design from the renowned workshops of Oro de Monte Alban, in Oaxaca.

According to legend, the Cruz de Yalalag originated with the women of San Juan Yalalag in Oaxaca and was one of the first designs to incorporate religious symbolism brought with the conquistadores. It is believed the women utilized different designs and styles to indicate their civil status as single, married or widowed. Another interpretation indicates that the three dangling crosses are meant to represent faith, hope and charity. The heart at the center is a required element as well.

The piercing back style is a locking french wire. The color of these is meant to imitate the  appearance of 18 or 22 karat gold, but the stamp and the price reflect the 14K designation. These weigh 7.50 grams, and the craftsmanship is all that one would expect from the greatly esteemed jewelers.
